Choosing a Hot Tub with the Right Voltage

Choosing your new hot tub comes with a lot of exciting decisions — seating, jets, Bluetooth sound systems, and lighting. But some buyers don’t realize that there is also a choice on voltage for their hot tub. And this isn’t just a casual choice because the decision has an impact on the use of your hot tub. If you’re confused about choosing a hot tub with the right voltage, we’ve got you covered. Use this information to help as you select your new hot tub with the right voltage for you.

Know Your Options

There are two options for hot tub voltage: 110 and 220. For a long time, most hot tubs were designed to use 220v. This is still the right voltage to select if you’re purchasing a larger hot tub. Increasingly, though, hot tubs are being made to run on 110v. This is why it’s important to consider other factors as you shop for a hot tub.

Consider The Climate

If you plan to use your new hot tub during snowy Colorado winters, you should select the higher voltage. Hot tubs with 220v tend to heat up faster than those with lower voltage. It will also help maintain the temperature for longer time periods, even during the coldest days of winter. The higher voltage will allow you to run the jets and heater as well without struggling to maintain temperature. Those who live in climates that don’t see as harsh a winter can easily get by on 110v. However, it will take a bit longer for their hot tub to heat up with the lower voltage.

Features And Occupancy

As you choose features for your new hot tub, you can’t help but think of how much you’ll enjoy it. But will you be enjoying it with one other person or a handful of friends? The number of people who will regularly be in your hot tub plays a factor in which voltage to choose. If you plan to only have one or two people in at a time, the 110v will work nicely. However, if you envision four to six people enjoying your hot tub at the same time, opt for the higher voltage.

If you plan to add multiple features, such as lighting, jets and speakers, you should choose the higher voltage as well. The 220v will allow you to maintain the water temperature while easily running additional features simultaneously.

Installation Requirements

One factor that may make the decision easier for you is to consider the installation. Are you currently renting your home? If so, a 110v hot tub is a great solution. This allows you to plug your hot tub into a regular electrical outlet and you’re ready to roll.

If you own your home and want to make your hot tub installation more permanent, you should opt for the 220v. This may require specialized installation by a professional electrician since it would require a connection to your home’s circuit breaker. Contact us for the list of our recommended electricians.
