Getting your gas fireplace up and running each season can be super simple once you are used to the process. But if this is your first time, you may be wondering how to light a gas fireplace. Know What Kind of Gas Fireplace You Have
There are several different types of gas fireplaces, each with its own process of getting lit. You’ll want to know what kind of gas fireplace you have, that way you can become familiar with how to light it.
If you have an older fireplace, it may be a milivolt system. These types of fireplaces have a standing pilot light that can be turned on and off from underneath the fireplace where all of the controls are located. These types of fireplaces often have a wall switch that allows you to turn the fireplace on and off easily.
However, the gas fireplaces offered at IHT use an IPI system, or Intermittent Pilot Ignition. This system uses an electronic ignition switch that lights the pilot, which means all it takes to light your gas fireplace is a flip of a wall switch or a press of a button on a remote. It’s a much easier and simpler way of lighting your gas fireplace. Very convenient!
Why Won’t My IPI Gas Fireplace Light?
If for whatever reason you flip the switch or press the remote button to turn on your gas fireplace and it doesn’t light, here are some things you can do:
Check the Batteries
If you tried lighting your gas fireplace with your remote and it didn’t work, check the batteries. It may be as simple as swapping the old batteries out for some fresh ones. If that doesn’t do the trick, your remote may need to be synced to the module. Give us a call or stop by if you need further assistance.
Call a Service Tech
If it’s your wall switch that isn’t working, the contacts may need to be cleaned. Please call the service department and they can assist you.
During a Power Outage
Both milivolt and IPI fireplaces will work during a power outage. IPI units come with a battery backup system that will allow you to light the pilot. The blower will not work but you will still have the radiant heat from the fireplace. Make sure to keep AAA batteries available but not installed in the battery backup system until you need them.
