How to Replace a Gas Fireplace Insert

A gas fireplace insert is a great way to add both beauty and warmth to your home. But like anything else, it eventually needs to be replaced. If you’re wondering how to replace a gas fireplace insert, you’ve come to the right place! Here in an overview that will help make the process clearer. IHT recommends hiring a professional to perform this job. This is not a DIY project for most people. This blog just describes the steps that will occur. IHT can recommend a professional to install your new gas insert.

Gather Tools and Materials

First things first, you’ll need to round up all of the necessary tools and materials. This includes your new gas fireplace insert, a drill, screwdriver, pliers, wrenches, crowbar, and a tape measure. You may also need additional materials depending on the type of insert you’re installing. For example, if you’re installing a vented gas insert, you’ll need venting pipe and fittings.

Remove the Old Fireplace Insert

Once you have everything you need, it’s time to get started! Begin by turning off the gas supply to the house at the main valve. Next, remove any trim from around the insert. Using a wrench, unfasten the gas line from the insert. Then, use a screwdriver or drill to remove the faceplate from the front of your fireplace. Once the faceplate is removed, you should be able to see the screws that hold your insert in place. Use your screwdriver or drill to remove these screws and then carefully take out the old insert.

Install Your New Fireplace Insert

Now it’s time for the exciting part: installing your new gas fireplace insert! Start by wiggling the new insert into place. Once you’re sure it’s a perfect fit, begin attaching it to the fireplace using screws or other fasteners (these will come with your insert). Reattach the gas line. Once everything is securely in place, turn on the gas supply and test for leaks by spraying the brass cap on your gas line with soapy water — bubbles mean that there is a leak, and the gas company needs to be called in right away.

Safety Tips

It’s important to remember that when working with a gas fireplace insert, safety always comes first. Make sure you are well informed and equipped for the process or have professionals on hand to take care of the job for you.

Put Everything Back in Place

The final step is to put everything back in place, so your fireplace looks as good as new. Replace any trim or molding that was removed during installation and then screw or nail it back into place. Finally, reattach your faceplate. And that’s it — you’re done!

Installing a new gas fireplace insert is a great way to add value and beauty to your home, not to mention keep things cozy during those cold winter months!
