Less Screen Time, More Swim Spa Time This Summer

Starting on the first day of school, it’s what every child looks forward to all year long — summer break! Their minds are filled with visions of freedom, staying up late and no homework. Meanwhile, parents may be a little less excited at the prospect of keeping their kids occupied all summer without the help of video games and screen time. If you’re looking for ways to keep your kids away from the television or computer, use these ideas for less screen time and more swim spa time this summer.

Practice Their Swimming Technique

Water safety and solid swimming skills are important for every child. Get out in the sun and away from the screens by spending time each day practicing swimming techniques. Each day you can focus on a different skill or you can stick with one particular technique until your child has mastered it. You can even wrap up each session with a game that utilizes that new skill. You may find it hard to tear them away from the swim spa once they get started!

Water Sports And Games

  • Ball Toss – Use floating rings or overturned frisbees as your goal. Toss ping pong balls and try to get them to land in the center of the rings or inside the frisbees. Use markers or designate colors to assign point values. Whoever has the most points wins!
  • Catch and Balance – Have each child sit on top of a pool floatie. Take a ball and toss it back and forth. The goal is to catch the ball without losing your balance and falling into the water.
  • Keep Away – The goal of this game is not to allow the floating balls to touch you. Take three balls that will float and toss them into the water. Your kids can move throughout the swim spa to avoid coming into contact with one of the balls. If they do, they’re out! You can make it more challenging by adding an extra ball or two every few minutes. Whoever is the last person standing wins!

Invite Friends For An Impromptu Pool Party

Summer was made for time with friends. If your kids have hit their screen time limit for the day or week, consider hosting an impromptu pool party! Your children can invite friends and enjoy an afternoon splashing and playing in your swim spa. Worried that you’ll have to feed a crowd of hungry kids after they’ve spent an afternoon in the sun? Suggest they bring their favorite snack for when swim spa time is over. They can bring something just for themselves or enough to share with their friends.
