Do Electric Fireplaces Use A Lot of Electricity?

So you want one of those fancy electric fireplaces, but will it make your power bill insane? With IHT, they won’t. We have a great selection of electric fireplaces to choose from, with a wide variety of options.

An electric fireplace uses, on average, 1500 watts at 12.5 amps. In terms of cost, this averages out to be around twenty cents an hour to use an electric fireplace. That may sound like a great deal, but to really know, we need to compare it to other things in your house that use electricity.

Electric Fireplace versus other appliances

Do electric fireplaces use a lot of electricity compared to other appliances? Well, yes and no. For example, the amount of electricity a dishwasher uses varies with size and age but on average, costs eighteen cents an hour to operate. So, on average, a dishwasher and an electric fireplace would cost around the same amount of electricity per hour.

The main difference is that a dishwasher usually runs once a day for an hour or two, while an electric fireplace will be running for many hours throughout the day. (That is, if you leave it running for long periods of time.) As far as cost goes there, you may find yourself spending more on the fireplace than the dishwasher per day you use it.

However, you’ll also only use your electric fireplace for part of the year when it’s cold. Whereas with your dishwasher, you’ll use it all year long on a daily basis. So the annual cost of electricity and hours of usage is about the same.

How electric fireplaces can save you money

Electric fireplaces can save you money by reducing the amount of time your heat runs in your house. If you know you will be spending most of your time in the area where your electric fireplace is, you can lower the heat for the rest of your house and heat the room/rooms where you are with the electric fireplace.

This is called zone heating. You can heat the room you are in while allowing the other rooms in your house that are not being used to be at a cooler temperature. It gives you the warmth you desire without the cost of heating your entire house. You will not have to use as much electricity in doing this and can, therefore, save some money on your electricity bill.

So, do electric fireplaces use a lot of electricity?

In short, they don’t use much electricity. It will not use as much electricity as larger appliances, like a dryer, but it will use more than a refrigerator.

But that is okay. An electric fireplace is an efficient way to help save money in the winter by allowing you to heat the rooms where you mostly gather and keep the HVAC at a lower temperature in the rest of the house.
